4 Reasons to Prepare Your Boiler For Winter

Mittens sit on a boiler to warm up.

As brisk weather approaches, plummeting temperatures can mean soaring heating costs.

Whether you’re anxiously anticipating — or completely dreading — the inevitable winter months, staying prepared can ease the tension as you glance over your bill.

By using a properly functioning boiler to heat your home instead of a furnace, your home will be heated faster while wasting less energy. Instead of distributing heat through vents, a boiler uses water to heat your home as it distributes steam through pipes and radiators.

But it’s not going to do all the work itself. You won’t have to do much, but with proper maintenance and quick tips, your boiler will be ready to heat your home. Check out these 4 reasons to prepare your boiler for winter:

1. An Efficiently Heated Home

Yes, that old-fashioned looking radiator in your home can be more efficient than a furnace. Instead of only relying on your furnace during the colder months, you should turn your boiler on for a short time, once per month — even in the summer! This allows you to detect problems ahead of time so you’re not sitting by a fire in the dead of winter attempting to keep warm as a repair technician arrives.

2. More Money in Your Pocket

By preparing your boiler for winter and staying on top of any repairs, you’ll avoid a costly fix later. Take a few minutes to clean and dust your boiler to ensure it’s free of any blockages that could result in bigger problems.

3. A Cleaner Unit

Did you know air can become trapped in your boiler and cause cold spots? Some radiators may be working while others might as well be useless. To combat this problem, it’s important to bleed your radiator. Don’t worry — you’re capable of this yourself. All you need is a few tools and you’re ready to tackle this quick and easy fix.

4. Peace of Mind

Instead of hesitating to turn on your boiler for fear of poor performance, properly preparing it for winter will allow you to turn it on and feel the familiar warmth in your home. Not only is it important to prepare your boiler for winter, a boiler replacement might be ideal for your situation. If your boiler is over 20 years old, heats unevenly or often requires extended preparation, it might be time for a change.

You talk about how it’s important to bleed your radiator before the winter months because air can become trapped and cause cold spots. That being said, I can see how doing this can help you ensure that air is flowing and circulating evenly and efficiently throughout your home. Thus, as you say in your previous point, this will help you to keep your radiator running properly, which will save you money in the long run. Thank you for sharing!

Thank you for the post! We’ve recently moved into an older home and we have a boiler. I like the tip to turn it on at least once a month, even in the summer, I will have to do that next year unfortunately. We’re probably going to hire a plumbing repair service to take a look at our boiler before it gets too cold.
