The Life Expectancy of a Sump Pump

Sump Pump

What is a sump pump you ask? Sump pumps are responsible for pumping excess ground water from the foundation or crawl space to the outside of the home. The sump pump is the most important part of a basement waterproofing system, and its life expectancy can depend on many factors.

On average, sump pumps will last around seven to ten years depending on factors such as size, maintenance, and usage. A pump that is too large can cycle on and off more frequently, resulting in a shorter life. A pump that is too small may not be able to successfully pump out enough water resulting in a flood. An undersized pump may also fail when it is called to run for long periods of time lacking the pumping capacity to shut off. Pumps come in various HP (horsepower) and range in pumping capacity a great deal. They also range in energy efficiency. Some 1/3HP pumps use 9-11AMPS of electricity and pump less water than pumps, which could use about half the amount of electricity.

Regular maintenance will also help your sump pump last longer. You should frequently check the pump to make sure it is working properly. This is especially true for newly constructed homes, as the sump basins in these homes are known to accumulate more debris than those in older homes. Being proactive will not only help your sump pump last longer, but will also help you prevent problems in the future. Any debris should be cleaned out and discarded. Sand, stones and sediment can all be hard on a pump.

Overall, you will get the most life out of a sump pump that is the correct size for the ground water conditions in your area, has a reliable float switch for the sump pit, and preferably a dedicated and quality electrical supply.
