Sump Pump Maintenance – How to Avoid Costly Repairs
Sump pump maintenance is crucial in protecting your home from water damage and ensuring your sump pump is operating at an optimal level. Get in the habit of taking a few minutes every couple months to maintain your sump pump. In addition, you should check your sump pump when heavy rains are expected, as well as at the beginning of the spring.
As you consider how you are going to maintain your sump pump, here are some simple maintenance tips to keep in mind in order to prevent costly repairs:
- Check the Discharge Pipe. Does the pit empty quickly, if not this is a sign of a problem. Most commonly a frozen or blocked discharge line causes this. If that’s not the case, the vent discharge line needs to be cleared. Check the vent hole to make sure it is clear and nothing is clogging it. A pump that is pushing water through a narrow pipe will not move water as quickly, or efficiently, as a pump that is moving water out a pipe that is larger in diameter.
As a result, always use a discharge pipe that is at least as large as the discharge size of the pump.
- Check the Power. Locate the power cord to ensure it is connected to power. While this may seem obvious, it is a small and important step in sump pump maintenance.
- Run your Own Tests. Running sump pump tests on your own will confirm that the pump is working correctly. You can do this by filling the sump pump with water and observing whether the pump turns on and the water drains properly.
- Replace the Pump Battery. Every other year, replace the battery in the backup pump to ensure it will work when needed. Make sure it has the proper water level in it and check the charge on the battery, depending on the quality of the battery; it may need to be replaced every couple years.
As with any machinery, regular maintenance will help the sump pump run smoothly and ease any apprehension about whether or not it will work when needed. Following these simple steps will help you avoid costly maintenance repairs.
